The June issue of Fine Gardening includes an article on shade plants for various parts of the country and for the Rocky Mountain recommends: 'Mrs. Moon' Bethlehem sage (Pulmonaria saccharata 'Mrs. Moon'; 'Herman's Pride' false deadnettle (Lamiastrum faleobdolon 'Herman's Pride'); 'Marmalade' heuchera (Heuchera Marmalade'), 'Jack Frost' brunnera (Brunnera 'Jack Frost'); and 'Elegans' hosta (Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans'). I would love to hear more about shade in a semi-arid climate. Perhaps it is because I grew up in a humid climate, but the shade plants I know of don't do well in the rain shadowed foothills of the northern Colorado.
