Plants in containers need a lot more fertilizer than plants in the ground because every time you water, some of the nutrients wash out and are unavailable to the plants. it is very easy to forget to fertilizer since it isn't much fun and you don't see the results for a while. Happy gardening!

I, too, herbs in pots so I can have them handy right outside my kitchen door. I have two kinds of parsley, basil, thyme, rosemary, bay chives, and tarragon and they are very productive all summer. I think I will do a post on herbs in pots. Thanks for the idea.

Great article. Am putting together a list for when I visit the garden centre this weekend, as I'm doing herbs, veggies and flowers in pots this year on top of my in-ground garden. Apparently three veggie beds aren't enough for me...

I really don't know if deer can climb steps. My husband swears they can't and we have never had them come up on our patio even though they have been eating everything around it. Good luck with your containers!

Thanks. A timely article. This is what I plan to do this year because of deer problems. I can put the pots on my deck. I wonder if deer can climb steps?
