Riz Reyes’ book, Grow, is a beautiful introduction to 14 plants and one fungus. Written for children ages 8-12 in grades 3-7, the book present the plants and fungus as heroes, based on their history of contributing to our lives and shaping the culture of people around the world. From mint and lettuce to aloe vera and orchid, Grow present a wide variety in information about plants combining scientific facts and practical advice with history to stimulate curiosity and an appreciation of plants.
The entry for each plant consists of four pages containing information, interesting tidbits, and beautiful illustrations. The first page introduces readers to the heroic qualities of the plant; pineapple, for example is the hero of flavor and friendship. The second page of the entry focuses on the unique characteristics of the plant, while the third page introduces other members of the plant’s family, and the fourth page provides history and horticultural tips for growing the plant. We learn, for example, that tomatoes are botanically considered berries, lettuce is in the same plant family daisies and artichokes (Asteraceae), and pumpkins were first cultivated 7,500 years ago in the highlands of Mexico. The Latin name is given for each plant along with especially interesting etymology for both common and Latin names. Popular varieties and cultivars are mentioned, suggestions for cultivation are given, and numerous fascinating tidbits appear in insets. Did you know that scientists think daffodil bulbs may contain a cancer treatment compound? that some bamboos can grow 1.5″ per hour? or that ancient Egyptians used lettuce seed to make oil? A short glossary concludes the work.
Grow is entertaining, educational, and easy to read. The short paragraphs are made up of simple sentences and are accompanied by large, colorful illustrations in a hand painted style. Terms like pollination, germination, tepal, and epiphyte are explained either in words or by picture. The book itself is handsome with embossed lettering on the cover, a sturdy binding, and pages of heavy paper.
